Phases of forming a party
- Collect signatures
- Create party officially
- Create non-profit organization
- Raise money
- Get candidates
- Run candidates in election
Advertising the party
- Concerns were expressed over the website and its format
- website is perhaps not "friendly" enough
- Advertising in print media, radio, and other traditional medias should be a focus, since many people rely on said media for their news and information
- Dane suggests: possibility of advertising during University of Waterloo orientation week?
- Trevor & John reply: absolutely against university policy to allow that sort of thing
- The only advertising during orientation week would have to be word of mouth
Educating people about the party
- Tynan suggests holding a public lecture or discussion on the party's issues
- We are able to get a lecture room on campus without being an official group recognized by the university
- Tynan suggests teaming up with the political science department, i.e. "Political Science department hosts the Pirate Party of Canada open discussions"
University club
- John suggests starting a Piratey Party club on campus to gain legitimacy within the university
- With a club we would be able to secure funding from the Federation of Students (Feds) to produce handouts, host lectures
- Start a club focussing on Net Neutrality, privacy, IP reform, but not officially affiliated with the party
Copyright consultation
- Townhall-like meeting being held in Toronto at the end of August
- PPoC should be against Bill C61
- Party should generate a letter template objecting to the bill
Facebook / Twitter
- Facebook's and Twitter's privacy policies are contrary to the PPoC's core principles
- Should not use Facebook and Twitter, however they are extremely useful advertising media
- PPoC members should consider sanitising the information they upload to these services
- Identi.ca is an Open Source alternative to Twitter, with a more sane privacy policy (ALL content is available under the Creative Commons Attribution 3.0 license)
Future plans
- Create a Feds group on campus
- Create copyright consultation letter template
- Fundraise to start non-profit organization
- Monthly meeting
- Toronto meeting on August 27th?
