Transcript for the Special Meeting on November 1st, 2010

[20:00] <@Zblewski> 8 PM.
[20:00] <@Zblewski> Any other discussion should move to #offtopic. We need to pick a speaker.
[20:02] <@MikkelPaulson> very well
[20:02] <@MikkelPaulson> I'll nominate myself for the position
[20:02] <@MikkelPaulson> any other volunteers?
[20:02] <@Zblewski> Speak now or forever hold your peace
[20:02] <MissKitty> Second Mikkel for speaker
[20:03] <@MikkelPaulson> any objections?
[20:03] <@Zblewski> Nay.
[20:03] <JeffColeman2> hey Mikkel--I haven't made it over to that billboard in the last couple
of days, so I'm not sure. But I did find the main campaign site at (Link: http://www.gov.mb.ca
/business/jane_jeff/index.html)http://www.gov.mb.ca/business/jane_jeff/index.html
[20:03] <JeffColeman2> very ironic given my line of work :)
[20:03] <JeffColeman2> whoops, sorry
[20:04] <@MikkelPaulson> okay then
[20:04] <@MikkelPaulson> let's get to business
[20:04] <@MikkelPaulson> at hand today is the nomination of Jeff Coleman as Pirate Party MP
candidate in the Winnipeg North by-election
[20:04] <@MikkelPaulson> Jeff, you have 10 minutes to introduce yourself and get things going
[20:05] <@MikkelPaulson> sorry
[20:05] <@MikkelPaulson> oh, please note that you can vote at any time until the end of this
meeting online at vote.pirateparty.ca
[20:05] <+JeffColeman2> well, huge thanks for the little bio that was written up in the
newsletter
[20:06] <+JeffColeman2> I have been active on copyright and patent reform for a long time and
with the party since we started trying to launch it in 2006
[20:07] <+JeffColeman2> So when Mikkel asked for volunteers at the Winnipeg meeting to run as
candidate, it was an excellent opportunity to take this message to a wider audience
[20:08] <+JeffColeman2> I have a strong support base here and have collected about 90 signatures
out of 100 towards my registration with Elections Canada. Although I'm not officially
campaigning yet, people have been very receptive to the party's message.
[20:09] <+JeffColeman2> I would love to have this opportunity to represent us as our first
federal candidate, and I'm happy to answer any questions that people might have :)
[20:09] <@MikkelPaulson> shall I open up the floor?
[20:10] <+JeffColeman2> okay with me
[20:10] <@MikkelPaulson> okay
[20:10] <@MikkelPaulson> I'd like to make a brief statement first
[20:10] <@MikkelPaulson> I was in Winnipeg North last week to get the campaign started
[20:10] <@MikkelPaulson> originally my name was on the papers, but Jeff was at the meeting and
volunteered
[20:10] <@MikkelPaulson> so I spent the week helping him to get his campaign started
[20:11] <@MikkelPaulson> by rights he should have been approved by the membership before
anything else happened on behalf of the party
[20:11] <@MikkelPaulson> but due to the shortness of time he has been working as a de facto
candidate until the meeting
[20:11] <@MikkelPaulson> obviously we're going to need to refine our candidate selection
process, which will be a subject for discussion on the 19th
[20:12] <@MikkelPaulson> so I do apologize if I behaved improperly in allowing him to speak on
the party's behalf before his official approval
[20:12] <@MikkelPaulson> that's it for me
[20:12] <@MikkelPaulson> the floor is now open for up to 20 minutes
[20:12] <@Zblewski> Just for the record: What is the nature of your conflicts of interest? There
are two that you mentioned, running a business and running a fair copyright group.
[20:14] <@MikkelPaulson> JeffColeman2?
[20:14] <JeffColeman2> For my business, I consider it a general conflict of interest for MP's to
advocate change in areas that effect there income. Since making technology more effective for
people is inherently connected into my line of work I wanted to clarify that I would set that
aside if elected
[20:14] <JeffColeman2> *affect
[20:15] <JeffColeman2> For the Fair Copyright group, I didn't want to insinuate a formal
relationship between our party and the movement being run by professor Michael Geist, so I have
notified him of my intention to seek candidacy on behalf of the party
[20:16] <JeffColeman2> Whether or not a relationship between our groups is entered into is
something for both Geist and our party council/members to decide, rather than me; and it's best
to keep things simple for media and the public
[20:17] <JeffColeman2> so those are two things I wanted to be transparent about
[20:17] <rintaran> That's a smart move. As the Fair Copyright group is a NGO, it would look like
tampering of outside lobbying groups and a major conflict of interest as it is our primary
platform.
[20:17] <@Zblewski> Agreed.
[20:17] <MissKitty> agreed
[20:18] <~Nuitari> I think that if you are elected, that is something that will have to be dealt
with the ethic comissioner
[20:18] <rintaran> Doesn't mean we're not still horribly sympathetic to their cause, but it'd be
like Elizabeth May being a major organizer in Greenpeace at the same time as head of the Green
Party.
[20:18] <JeffColeman2> precisely
[20:18] <JeffColeman2> If we care about open and accountable government, we need to model it
ourselves first
[20:19] <MissKitty> public policy needs to be just that, not in the interests of any group
[20:19] <MissKitty> ...and it must also be seen that way
[20:19] <@Zblewski> Yes
[20:19] <@Zblewski> the public perception matters more than the truth
[20:20] <MissKitty> not more..
[20:20] <@Zblewski> always, always, always in polity
[20:20] <JeffColeman2> or how about as much as
[20:20] <JeffColeman2> I'm uncomfortable with 'more' as well
[20:20] <rintaran> Regardless, for the moment, the situation there is handled.
[20:20] <@Zblewski> ^
[20:20] <@DLS> hi, and sorry for the delay
[20:21] <rintaran> If elected, the ethics commissioner may say something differently, but it
should be fine.
[20:21] <psema4> Jeff, what's the current situation look like on the ground?
[20:21] <JeffColeman2> to clarify--if the party confirms my endorsement as candidate tonight
[20:21] <JeffColeman2> I will step down from leadership of that group
[20:21] <@DLS> JeffColeman2: awesome work btw
[20:21] <JeffColeman2> so the only thing to be relevant will be the history
[20:21] <psema4> DLS+1
[20:22] <JeffColeman2> psema4: things are very positive here
[20:22] <MissKitty> sounds like you've got some momentum already
[20:22] <JeffColeman2> I've come across several people who have heard of the party and are very
happy to hear of us running a candidate
[20:22] <rintaran> Just to verify for the sake of minutes, could everyone present please send me
a quick message so I have you in attendance. Thank-you.
[20:22] <@DLS> MissKitty: he's man of the situation i say
[20:23] <@DLS> going to propulse this party into the next level
[20:23] <@MikkelPaulson> one thing I can say is that from my experience after spending the last
week with him, Jeff's enthusiasm, conviction, and articulate discussion are great
[20:23] <JeffColeman2> many other people saw the piece that CTV did last sunday, so there's been
a good response from that too
[20:23] <@Zblewski> Excellent.
[20:23] <MissKitty> v. exciting
[20:24] <@DLS> <3
[20:24] <JeffColeman2> if you follow the twitter and facebook pages
[20:24] <rintaran> As of yet, I haven't noticed anything from other winnipeg news sites.
[20:24] <JeffColeman2> I put up a lot of the responses I get from people
[20:24] <JeffColeman2> all of it has been very encouraging
[20:24] <@MikkelPaulson> rintaran: we're working on that
[20:24] <MissKitty> part of the "listening", yes?
[20:24] <@Zblewski> Yes.
[20:24] <@MikkelPaulson> I was hoping for a more enthusiastic response from the media, but
there's definitely more coming
[20:25] <rintaran> Once some signs actually start going up, there will be a bit of a wave.
[20:25] <@MikkelPaulson> and becoming a registered party, as we will if Jeff is approved and
submits his paperwork, will be a good excuse for nationwide coverage
[20:25] <JeffColeman2> yes, having the outcome from the vote tonight is critical for a proper
media push
[20:25] <@Zblewski> I also have a very enthusiastic writer that will assist in anything Jeff or
the PPCA needs in regards to the campaign.
[20:25] <~Nuitari> excellent
[20:25] <@DLS> big waves of PRing ahead!
[20:25] <JeffColeman2> several journalists I have contacted are awaiting the outcome
[20:25] <@MikkelPaulson> since the media has already been treating you as an official candidate,
I think it will be more your registration with Elections Canada than with the party that will
make waves
[20:26] <~Nuitari> still need to ride the auditor's asses
[20:26] <JeffColeman2> Zblewski: excellent!
[20:26] <JeffColeman2> yes--I am hoping to file it tomorrow, pending tonight's confirmation
[20:26] <@Zblewski> Good to hear.
[20:26] <@MikkelPaulson> done the signatures?
[20:27] <@Zblewski> he said 90/100
[20:27] <JeffColeman2> no, still about 10 more to go and I want to do 30 to be safe
[20:27] <@DLS> good idea
[20:27] <JeffColeman2> never hurts to do a few more
[20:27] <MissKitty> is there any way to get a photo op of the registration? Canada's newest party
[20:27] <rintaran> That would be good.
[20:27] <~Nuitari> we also need a letter fromt he auditor saying that they accept to be doing
your audit
[20:27] <rintaran> Be a nice add for the splash page on the website...
[20:27] <JeffColeman2> I would be interested. anyone in Winnipeg handy with a camera?
[20:28] <@DLS> guess that's a no
[20:28] <rintaran> Ottawa today, Kirkland Lake tomorrow. Sorry mate.
[20:28] <@MikkelPaulson> as far as I know it consists of faxing a copy of your application form,
then waiting 48 hours for the response
[20:28] <@MikkelPaulson> not sure how much photo opping there will be to do
[20:28] <JeffColeman2> Nuitari: I haven't re-read the full documentation, but do I need that to
file with the returning officer?
[20:28] <~Nuitari> yes
[20:29] <JeffColeman2> okay--good to know
[20:29] <~Nuitari> btw, if you know someone that can do it locally with you, that would be better
[20:29] <rintaran> Well, you can get that into a photo op... Do it at a local shop, with the
logo of the shop in the background. The shop owner may comp the fax fee for the free advertising.
[20:29] <MissKitty> hey, if pols can get cameras out for their own voting experience, we can
photograph our registration :)
[20:30] <MissKitty> rintaran: nice
[20:30] <@Zblewski> 2 minutes remain in discussion, by the way
[20:30] <@MikkelPaulson> 2:40
[20:30] <rintaran> I just started learning about dealing with sponsorship the other day. :)
[20:30] <JeffColeman2> not off the top of my head Nuitari
[20:31] <@MikkelPaulson> 1:30 remains
[20:31] <JeffColeman2> any other questions people had for me?
[20:31] <@MikkelPaulson> anything else? we can extend the discussion period if need be
[20:31] <rintaran> With the listening campaign that you've been running, have you been getting
many responses actually related to Federal Issues?
[20:32] <JeffColeman2> yes
[20:32] <rintaran> If so, what have the peeps of Winnipeg North been telling you?
[20:32] <JeffColeman2> it's true that it's hard to know which things go to which level of
government
[20:32] <MissKitty> anyone have valid objections to our ideas?
[20:32] <JeffColeman2> but a lot of people care about things that effect the whole country
[20:32] <@MikkelPaulson> that concludes the general discussion period
[20:32] <@MikkelPaulson> unless someone wants to move to extend it
[20:33] <JeffColeman2> MissKitty: not so far
[20:33] <@Zblewski> I think we can move on
[20:33] <@DLS> indeed
[20:33] <MissKitty> sure
[20:33] <@MikkelPaulson> okay
[20:33] <@MikkelPaulson> you have 5 minutes to close
[20:33] <@MikkelPaulson> then we'll call the vote
[20:34] <+JeffColeman2> I feel well-prepared to take on this campaign
[20:34] <+JeffColeman2> and I would be honoured by the opportunity
[20:34] <+JeffColeman2> let's go out there and show Canada what Pirates are capable of!
[20:35] <@MikkelPaulson> ready for the vote?
[20:35] <+JeffColeman2> yup
[20:35] <@MikkelPaulson> okay
[20:35] <@MikkelPaulson> (Link: https://vote.pirateparty.ca)https://vote.pirateparty.ca
[20:35] <@MikkelPaulson> you have 2 minutes to vote
[20:35] <@MikkelPaulson> after which the results will be announced
[20:38] <@DLS> are we there yet?
[20:38] <@MikkelPaulson> and done
[20:38] <@MikkelPaulson> rintaran/Nuitari: the results?
[20:39] <~Nuitari> minute
[20:39] <@Zblewski> I barely got in, you might want to refresh the results.
[20:39] <@Zblewski> I lost my PIN >.>
[20:40] <MissKitty> vote page wouldn't let me in...
[20:40] <~Nuitari> it passes, 47 yes, 1 nay
[20:40] <@DLS> "hi" to the person who voted no
