[22:44] <~MikkelPaulson> I call the meeting to order
[22:45] <~MikkelPaulson> first order of business: Tunisia
[22:45] <~MikkelPaulson> I've been holding daily meetings with the former
WikiLeaks task group on the subject
[22:45] <~MikkelPaulson> and we've been getting briefings from PPTN on the
current situation for them
[22:46] <+Zblewski> How has the situation progressed? More tense?
[22:46] <~MikkelPaulson> it's getting worse
[22:46] <~MikkelPaulson> or at least more intense, I don't know how you'd
qualify "worse" given that we may be seeing the infancy of a coup against a
corrupt authoritarian dictatorship
[22:47] <~MikkelPaulson> of the three PPTN members originally taken into
custody, two have been released
[22:47] <+Zblewski> Which one is still incarcerated?
[22:48] <+Zblewski> I didn't hear which
[22:48] <~MikkelPaulson> I believe it's Slim Amamou
[22:49] <+Zblewski> Okay.
[22:49] <~MikkelPaulson> if they're still abiding by rule of law, they have
to lay charges within 48 hours of arrest
[22:49] <~MikkelPaulson> which means he would have to have been charged with
something by now, although I don't know what
[22:50] <~MikkelPaulson> I've offered the PPCA's full support, but so long
as Slim is still in custody, they don't want to risk compromising his safety
and have asked us to refrain from becoming officially involved
[22:51] <+Zblewski> Understandable.
[22:51] <~MikkelPaulson> however, they're consulting with Amnesty
International, so they may decide to take a different approach depending on
what response they receive
[22:51] <~MikkelPaulson> I'm going to be honest, I don't like this waiting
game one bit
[22:51] <+Zblewski> What else can be done?
[22:51] <~MikkelPaulson> I don't know
[22:51] <+Nuitari> I know, but we need to abide by PPTN's wishes
[22:52] <~MikkelPaulson> I will be talking about it at the rally tomorrow
for sure
[22:52] <~MikkelPaulson> I asked them if they had anything in particular
they wanted me to discuss and they said just get word out
[22:53] <~MikkelPaulson> I know Shawn canvassed a bunch of Ottawa travel
agents to inform them of the situation
[22:53] <~MikkelPaulson> since Tunisia is (or was until recently) a popular
vacation spot
[22:54] <~MikkelPaulson> however, some good news: it sounds like the
internet filter has been removed today
[22:54] <+Zblewski> Wait, what did Shawn do?
[22:54] <~MikkelPaulson> http://shawngray.ca/?p=860
[22:54] <~MikkelPaulson> "Despite this, many of us, including myself, took a
trip to numerous travel agents around our city (I managed 12) with a brief
outline of the current situation in what has long been thought to be the
most stable Arab country, and a fantastic Mediterranean vacation
destination. The travel agents that I spoke with politely took the letter,
and as I began to explain the situation, expressed their shock at the
developments."
[22:55] <~MikkelPaulson> the #1 request from PPTN in the past has been for
mirrors and proxies, which PPDE and others have been providing
[22:56] <~MikkelPaulson> I'll attend the meeting tomorrow and see what
updated direction they want us to take, and hopefully we'll be able to offer
some official assistance there
[22:56] <+Zblewski> Speaking of which, that segues into our server issue
[22:58] <~MikkelPaulson> indeed it does
[22:58] <~MikkelPaulson> Nuitari: what's the mirror status?
[22:58] <+Nuitari> we have the server domain and everything
[22:58] <+Nuitari> but the mass mirror system of WL isn't working
[22:59] <+Nuitari> we could use the server as a proxy for PPTN though
[22:59] <~MikkelPaulson> not http://wikileaks.ch/Mass-mirroring-
Wikileaks.html ?
[23:00] <+Nuitari> it doesn't post
[23:00] <+Nuitari> says file not found once I fill out the form
[23:00] <~MikkelPaulson> hm
[23:01] <~MikkelPaulson> well sure, let's run it as a mirror in the meantime
[23:01] <~MikkelPaulson> at least it's going to some good use
[23:01] <+Nuitari> ah now it works
[23:01] <+Zblewski> Our legal advisor cleared us for doing stuff, at least
[23:01] <~MikkelPaulson> erm, proxy
[23:01] <+Nuitari> good
[23:01] <+Zblewski> hahahah
[23:01] <~MikkelPaulson> yeah
[23:01] <+Nuitari> finally we might get somewhere with it
[23:01] <+Nuitari> we'll see if a mirror happens
[23:02] <+Nuitari> if it does we'll keep the server and I'll also put copies
of the insurance file on it
[23:02] <~MikkelPaulson> may as well set it up as a proxy too, neither use
is going to come anywhere near pushing it to capacity
[23:02] <+Nuitari> yeah, if PPTN requests it we can do that
[23:02] <+Nuitari> I can set up an encrypted tunnel through it
[23:03] <~MikkelPaulson> besides, it's hard to support WikiLeaks without
doing what we can to support its consequences
[23:03] <~MikkelPaulson> and the situation in Tunisia was sparked in part by
the diplomatic cables
[23:05] <+Nuitari> oh?
[23:05] <+Nuitari> I haven't had much chance to follow that situation
[23:05] <~MikkelPaulson> the cables included details on the excesses of the
president
[23:06] <+Nuitari> ah
[23:06] <~MikkelPaulson> including a pet tiger, apparently
[23:06] <+Nuitari> I see
[23:06] <+Nuitari> kinds of had it coming either way
[23:06] <~MikkelPaulson> http://www.guardian.co.uk/commentisfree/2011/jan
/13/tunisia-youth-revolution?CMP=twt_fd
[23:06] <~MikkelPaulson> this is a really interesting article on the subject
[23:06] <~MikkelPaulson> firsthand account
[23:07] <~MikkelPaulson> to the best of my knowledge, no real leader has
appeared so far
[23:08] <~MikkelPaulson> anyway
[23:08] <~MikkelPaulson> I'll keep you appraised of the situation
[23:08] <+Zblewski> Thanks.
[23:08] <~MikkelPaulson> could one of you make it to the meeting on Saturday?
[23:08] <~MikkelPaulson> 2 pm your time
[23:08] <~MikkelPaulson> I'll be en route to Calgary by that time
[23:09] <~MikkelPaulson> and speaking of which
[23:09] <+Zblewski> I can do it, if not, I'll notify Nuitari or Rintaran
[23:09] <~MikkelPaulson> okay
[23:09] <~MikkelPaulson> I didn't get any minutes from the meeting today
[23:09] <+Nuitari> I don't think I can do it
[23:09] <+Nuitari> just lack the time to take on more
[23:10] <~MikkelPaulson> I understand
[23:10] <+Zblewski> If it were tomorrow, not a chance.
[23:10] <+Nuitari> I've sent out the last receipts today
[23:10] <~MikkelPaulson> no, I should be able to make it to the meeting
tomorrow
[23:10] <~MikkelPaulson> good stuff
[23:10] <~MikkelPaulson> any more donations since last we spoke?
[23:12] <+Nuitari> yeah 1 with a flag request
[23:12] <+Nuitari> 100$
[23:12] <+Zblewski> Excellent
[23:12] <~MikkelPaulson> cool
[23:12] <+Nuitari> 2 flags to go
[23:12] <~MikkelPaulson> guess the flags were a good idea
[23:12] <+Zblewski> Looks like we might need more
[23:12] <~MikkelPaulson> I may not need all four of the ones you sent me
[23:13] <~MikkelPaulson> still have to figure out how to jury-rig a flagpole
[23:13] <~MikkelPaulson> apparently a freestanding flagpole outdoors is a
tall order
[23:13] <~MikkelPaulson> they just blow over
[23:13] <~MikkelPaulson> so Steve and I are going to experiment with sandbags
[23:13] <+Zblewski> heh.
[23:13] <+Nuitari> you need to actually hold it and wave it around too
[23:14] <+Nuitari> or have 2 people hold one open
[23:14] <~MikkelPaulson> yup
[23:14] <~MikkelPaulson> so I'll bring all four
[23:14] <+Zblewski> Duct tape and a wall?
[23:14] <~MikkelPaulson> if we need them
[23:14] <~MikkelPaulson> Jeff suggested Livestreaming the events
[23:15] <~MikkelPaulson> I think we'll just shoot video and upload it later
though
[23:16] <~MikkelPaulson> I'll also need to take the bus down there it sounds
like
[23:17] <~MikkelPaulson> so all told expect about $200 expenses for the
rally, after flag-related equipment
[23:17] <+Nuitari> ok
[23:17] <+Nuitari> do you need petty cash or you can get a refund later?
[23:17] <~MikkelPaulson> a refund is fine
[23:18] <+Nuitari> ok
[23:20] <~MikkelPaulson> I'm talking to Shawn about his rally at the moment
[23:20] <~MikkelPaulson> he got 100 PPCA stickers printed
[23:20] <~MikkelPaulson> flyers and flags
[23:20] <~MikkelPaulson> sign-making materials
[23:21] <~MikkelPaulson> sounds like a bunch of media coverage as well
[23:21] <+Nuitari> cool
[23:22] <~MikkelPaulson> I didn't think of inviting him to present at the
Council meeting until just now, but unfortunately he's busy
[23:22] <~MikkelPaulson> anyway, that's the gist of the conversation
[23:22] <~MikkelPaulson> unfortunately as the rally is going to be held in
front of the downtown library they won't be able to use a megaphone as we
will
[23:23] <~MikkelPaulson> mm
[23:23] <~MikkelPaulson> anything else to bring up about the rallies?
[23:23] <+Zblewski> Nope
[23:23] <+Zblewski> Next
[23:23] <~MikkelPaulson> okee
[23:24] <~MikkelPaulson> I know we discussed having candidates shadow our
Council meetings last week, but we never put it to a vote, so I think we
should do that
[23:24] <+Nuitari> aye
[23:25] <~MikkelPaulson> aye
[23:25] <~MikkelPaulson> (sorry, the motion is that the Council invite
candidates to join its debates as non-voting members during the by-election
period)
[23:26] <~MikkelPaulson> Zblewski?
[23:26] <+Nuitari> 1 flag left, the donator in december wants one
[23:26] <+Zblewski> Aye.
[23:27] <~MikkelPaulson> okay
[23:27] <~MikkelPaulson> last thing I had on the agenda is the budget
[23:27] <~MikkelPaulson> any chance of getting that ready to go for next
meeting?
[23:29] <+Nuitari> no
[23:29] <+Zblewski> I don't know if I'll have the time, but if I do, it will
still definitely not be ready in time
[23:29] <+Nuitari> it's just too vague
[23:29] <+Zblewski> ^
[23:30] <~MikkelPaulson> hmm
[23:30] <~MikkelPaulson> unfortunately so
[23:30] <~MikkelPaulson> what about a summary of 2010 expenses?
[23:30] <~MikkelPaulson> (income and)
[23:30] <+Nuitari> my wife still needs to finish the bookkeeping for 2010
[23:31] <~MikkelPaulson> okay
[23:31] <~MikkelPaulson> well, if we're not looking to have the new year's
budget approved, it's not as urgent
[23:31] <~MikkelPaulson> maybe at the February meeting?
[23:32] <+Nuitari> yeah
[23:33] <+Zblewski> Yes.
[23:33] <~MikkelPaulson> okay
[23:33] <~MikkelPaulson> well
[23:33] <~MikkelPaulson> something to discuss later on then I guess
[23:33] <~MikkelPaulson> oh, and on the subject of the election, it sounds
like Jeff would prefer to stand for election as candidate again than to run
for Council
[23:33] <~MikkelPaulson> he doesn't expect to have time for both
[23:34] <+Nuitari> alright
[23:34] <+Nuitari> we do need candidates
[23:34] <~MikkelPaulson> that we do
[23:34] <+Nuitari> any news on the money btw?
[23:34] <~MikkelPaulson> and I think we need Jeff more as candidate than as
director
[23:34] <~MikkelPaulson> oh I forgot to ask
[23:34] <~MikkelPaulson> will do
[23:35] <+Zblewski> I know of one person considering
[23:35] <+Zblewski> and will likely take a shot
[23:35] <~MikkelPaulson> candidacy?
[23:35] <+Zblewski> council
[23:35] <~MikkelPaulson> oh
[23:35] <~MikkelPaulson> well, time's running out
[23:37] <+Zblewski> Indeed
[23:37] <~MikkelPaulson> anything else to raise or shall we call it a night?
[23:37] <+Nuitari> look in #canada about donating to Manning's defense fund
[23:38] <~MikkelPaulson> I'd err on the side of "can't be done", personally
[23:39] <+Zblewski> Gnight
[23:40] <~MikkelPaulson> okay, I'll call the meeting adjourned
